Research & Development Overview

Lelienfontein Vine Growers is pro-active on a continuous basis in order to innovate and improve the quality standards of vines available to grape growers as well as the service standards of the vine industry. Our objective is to work in partnership with grape growers and plant improvement organizations to create sustainable solutions to challenges that growers might face in the vineyards.

Our current areas of focus with our research and development programs are:

  • The establishment of mother plantation (rootstocks) in isolated areas such as Leeugamka, Ceres Karoo, Klein Karoo, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to reduce the risk of contamination.
  • The establishment of mother blocks to ensure the availability of rare and niche plant material to the industry.
  • The monitoring of grafted varieties in our Vine Garden in the Upper-Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Inquire here for annual tasting opportunities of these clonal varieties.
  • The propagation of new table and raisin grape varieties in our Foundation Tunnels in collaboration with SAPO and Topfruit.
  • The development of our facilities and structures for the trustworthy and professional propagation of imported plant material.

Our industry is very dynamic and needs change on a regular basis. Our aim is to be on top of our game at all times with our finger on the pulse of latest developments.
